How a UNESCO laureate is empowering girls through ICT in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s Shilpa Sayura Foundation has gone from strength to strength since winning the 2020 UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education Prize, for its NextGen Girls in Technology programme. The programme is increasing girls’ and women’s participation in the country’s booming tech sector through training in coding and other essential ICT skills.

As part of International Girls in ICT Day 2024 celebrations, UNESCO caught up with Poornima Meegammana, Shilpa Sayura Foundation’s Youth Development Program Manager, on the expansion of their training programme. She shares how winning the Prize has helped them to further innovate their programmes and forge a groundbreaking partnership with Sri Lanka’s central province’s Ministry of Education, to empower even more girls to pursue careers in ICT.
